How to recognize when comparison is sabotaging your business decisions and momentum
[0:06] Hey there, and welcome to episode 21 of Your Fun and Profitable Online Business. This is the podcast that helps you grow with more joy and way less of, what am I even doing here anyway? I’m Wendy Muzzy, a money coach, online business strategist, and your favorite cheerleader on this journey to building a business that actually feels like you. Today, I want to talk about something that we all fall into from time to time, whether we like to admit it or not. It’s the comparison trap. That sneaky voice that says, she’s doing better than me. She’s further along. Sound familiar? Let’s unpack why this mindset will slow your business down and how to shift it. Now, sometimes the comparison doesn’t sound like she made six figures in six minutes. What am I doing wrong? It feels like it sounds like that, but it doesn’t. Sometimes it sounds like I should be further along, or this should be easier, or maybe I need another course. Now, this is only internal pressure and it’s your inner critic using someone else’s highlight reel as its measuring stick. Have you ever heard that comparison is a thief of joy? Now, here’s the truth. It doesn’t just steal your joy. It hijacks your momentum. When you’re constantly looking at what everyone else is doing, you try to replicate their path instead of trusting your own. And the worst part, You start shrinking your vision to fit what that success, that vision of success is supposed to look like. This comes with real cost. It can delay decisions. You can wait weeks to share something because you feel like it’s not good enough. Or it can dilute your brand. You start second guessing your content or your copy, trying to fit in a box that isn’t yours, instead of just trusting what feels right. It can also deplete your energy. Comparison doesn’t just live in your mind. It creeps into how you show up and how you serve. Quite frankly, it’s exhausting. Now, here’s the real kicker. It doesn’t even move you closer to your goals. If there was some positive benefit, it may be like, okay, they’ll use that if you need to. But it doesn’t even do that. It just distracts you from your goals. Let me remind you of the truth. You didn’t start this business to follow someone else’s blueprint. You started it to create something that fits your life and your genius. Instead of comparing to someone else’s pace or their process or however they’re doing it, come back to your why. Why did you start this business? Who do you love working with and how do you help them? Now, this isn’t just some fluffy mindset work. This is strategy. When you anchor in your why, it fuels your business goals and no one else gets to define that but you. All right, let’s try this together. Instead of thinking, she’s so much further along, Maybe try, she’s a possibility of what’s available to me. Look, other people’s wins don’t take a single thing away from you. They just show you what’s possible when you stay in your lane. Let their momentum be a mirror for what’s available to you, not a measure of your worth.
A 3-step strategy to escape the comparison trap and refocus on your own path
[3:17] Okay, let’s make this a little practical now. Here’s how to get out of the comparison trap and to step into a version of success that actually feels good to you. Step one, unfollow to refocus. You can’t hear your own voice when you’re surrounded by noise. Audit your feed. Who inspires you? Keep them. Who triggers doubt or makes you spiral? Mute or unfollow. Get them out of the view. This doesn’t mean that they’re doing anything wrong. It just means that their path isn’t your path. Give yourself the space to hear your own vision again. Step two, redefine, air quotes, results. Instead of only measuring revenue or followers, try tracking your energy levels or your confidence or your creativity or your joy, or even the client results you’ve helped make happen, not just the testimonials, the impact you’ve helped with. Look, you’re building a fun and profitable business, not just a profitable one. And that means success might look like waking up excited, not just getting another Stripe notification. Step three, choose a milestone that matters to you. Not make 100K because someone said so. If that’s important to you, great, go for it. But don’t do it because someone else said that’s important. Maybe it’s consistently working 25 hours a week or taking off Fridays and still hitting your goals. Maybe it’s selling 10 spots in a program you’re really proud of or finally building the offer that you’ve been thinking about for months. When you can fully embrace this, it creates success on your terms. And that’s why we’re here.
A simple exercise to clarify what success looks like on YOUR terms
[5:06] All right, let’s get to your action step. I want you to take five minutes and answer this. If no one else could see my business, what would I want it to feel like? Write that down. That is your definition of success, not theirs, yours. Then choose one tiny tweak you can make this week to move towards that version of success. If you wanna take a step further, make a list of three things you’re extra proud of in your business right now, not someday, not when you hit the next goal, right now. Maybe you’ve got a discovery call and you felt really confident, or you sent that podcast pitch you’ve been putting off, or you took a full day off without feeling guilt. Write these down and keep them visible because this is your success story and process. All right, here’s the final reminder I wanna leave you with. You are already successful because you’re showing up. You’re doing the work, you’re building something real. You don’t need a viral launch or six-figure year to prove your worth. You just need to trust your own timing and you need to get clear on what you want. Now, your version of a success, it’s already taking shape. Let’s stop measuring someone else’s metrics and build it your way. You’ve got this. Until next time, keep owning your business journey!
