[0:06] Hey there, and welcome to episode 34 of Your Fun and Profitable Online Business. This is the podcast that helps you grow your business with intention, momentum, and of course, a sprinkle of confetti. I’m your host, Wendy Muzzy, a certified money coach, online business strategist, and your hype girl for creating a fun and profitable online business. Now, before we get into it today, I want to thank you for listening. Seriously, every download, every message, every time you hit play, it means so much to me. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Okay. Today, we’re going to talk about the trap that so many entrepreneurs fall into, over-delivering. You know that moment when you hand off a project or you wrap up a coaching call and you realize you did way more than what was actually promised? And instead of feeling like a rock star, you feel drained, and maybe even a little resentful. That’s what we’re tackling today. Why it happens, why it hurts your business, and three steps to stop over-delivering while still giving your clients an amazing experience. All right, let’s get to it.

Why Overdelivering Hurts Your Business

[1:18] Now, I want to say this loud and clear. I know you’re generous. I know you care about your clients. That’s not what we’re talking about here. What we’re talking about is that sneaky pattern of doing way more than you’re paid for.

The Difference Between Excellent Service and Overdelivering

This isn’t the same as providing excellent service. Let’s just lineate that right now. Excellence is meeting the promise you made consistently and with care. Over-delivering is moving the goalpost and then wondering why you’re getting tired of the game. And it can sneak up on you and eat away at your profit, your confidence, and your energy. I was recently coaching a client and she was adding so many extras to her program, extra calls, extra time, adding more and more and more, all because she thought, I need to prove that this is worth it.

The Hidden Costs of Overdelivering for Clients

[2:05] My client was growing exhausted and instead of feeling proud, she started to feel resentful and their client never asked for any of the extras. In fact, they were getting overwhelmed. That’s the sneaky part of all this. Over delivering doesn’t actually create a more satisfied client. It often leaves you drained and trains your client to expect more for less or stay stuck in an action. So why does it happen? Maybe it’s the fear of losing the client or thinking your prices are too high or believing that good service, air quotes there, means giving more than what you promised. And when you over deliver, you blur the line of what the offer really is. You cut into your profits and you set yourself up for burnout and resentment. And when resentment creeps in, it shows. Your tone shifts, your emails feel heavier, even your creativity dips. Because part of you is silently saying, I’m doing too much and I’m not being valued for it. This kills your business. And maybe the most important piece, it keeps you stuck in hustle mode instead of stepping into that powerful CEO energy that’s inside of you. Now, here’s what I found to be true.

Why Entrepreneurs Overdeliver

[3:19] Almost every single time, over-delivering is a money mindset issue disguised as good service.

How Money Mindset Leads to Overdelivering

It’s a form of people-pleasing in business clothes. And I promise you, your clients didn’t hire you to be their people pleaser. They hired you to be their guide. This is what I call logifying.

How to Stop Overdelivering Without Feeling Guilty

[3:38] We do this behavior for this good reason. But in reality, it’s because of something deeper. Maybe it’s insecurity or worry or fear or not enoughness. The list can go on and on here. But let’s call it what it is. So how do you actually stop over delivering without feeling like you’re short changing people? I’ve got three steps for you.

Get Clear on What’s Included in Your Offer

Step one, get clear on your offer. Know exactly what’s included. Spell it out. What are the deliverables? What’s the timeline? If it’s coaching, is it three sessions? Is it four? Is it 20? It doesn’t matter. Do they get boxer access? If so, during what hours? And this is key. Put it in writing. This can be your contract or even your sales page. When you do this, it protects you and gives your client confidence. And here’s something that’s equally important. Make sure you list it consistently across all of your documents. If your marketing says one thing and your contract says another, you’re planting the seed of confusion before the work even starts. Clear is kind here. I recently saw an ad for a group program that was six months, but when I went to the sales page, it said three months. That’s a huge red flag if you ask me.

Why Consistent Offer Messaging Matters

[4:49] Step two, check in on your money mindset. Get curious about your money story. What do you think about money and the role it plays in your life? This ties into how you value your work. When you devalue your contributions, you’ll keep giving more to make up for it. Your clients didn’t hire you for 20 extra hours of work, so why are you giving it? They hired you for the result, the transformation, or the deliverable you promised. That’s where the value is.

Set Better Business Boundaries With Clients

Step three, set boundaries. This is where communication comes in. Scripts often help me. You can say something like, that’s outside the scope of what we agreed on, but I’d love to add it on as an additional service. Or my office hours are Monday through Thursday, so I’ll get back to you first thing next week. Boundaries don’t have to feel harsh. They can be supportive and definitely be professional. Think of them like the bumpers at a bowling alley. They don’t stop the ball from going down the lane. They keep it moving forward. And trust me, your ideal client will respect them. I wanna be clear here. Great client experiences don’t come from the extras. They come from being reliable, communicating well, and delivering exactly what you promised on time.

How Boundaries Improve the Client Experience

[6:02] So let’s take a minute to imagine what happens after you start implementing these strategies in your business. You wrap up with a client and you have energy to spare instead of feeling wiped out. Your clients know exactly what to expect. They trust you and they respect your time. And best of all, your profit goes up without you working harder. Probably working less, actually. Instead of hustling to prove something, you step into the role of a business owner who delivers results with confidence. That’s the version of you who grows a business that feels sustainable, not one that’s constantly sprinting to keep up. And here’s the bonus.

What Happens When You Stop Overdelivering

When you stop over-delivering, you also create space to innovate, to rest, and to serve more clients without burning out. That’s where true growth happens, friend. That feels a lot better, doesn’t it?

Audit Your Offers for Scope Creep

[6:54] All right, here’s one small step you can take for this week. Take a look at any one of your current offers. Write down exactly what’s included. Detail every part. Be clear. Even just seeing your offer written down in black and white can be such an eye-opener. You’ll spot where you’ve been slipping in the extras without even realizing it. If you want a bonus step, identify where you’re over-delivering and stop doing that this week. You’ve got this. I know you can do this. Okay, let’s wrap this all up. Today, we talked about why over-delivering isn’t the same as excellence, how it hurts your business, and the three steps you can take to stop. Get clear on your offer, check your money mindset, and set your boundaries.

[7:39] Remember, over-delivering doesn’t serve you or your clients. Boundaries do. This is how you can show up as a competent entrepreneur and keep your business fun and profitable, which is the goal we all have. Now, speaking of fun and profitable, next week we’re talking about business foundations. There’s not the basic stuff. We’re talking about the building blocks that make your entire business feel lighter and more focused. You’ll definitely want to check it out.
