Podcast Management by Old State Media

[0:06] Hey there, and welcome to episode 23 of Your Fun and Profitable Online Business. This is the podcast that helps you go from spinning your wheels to gaining momentum with simple steps and powerful shifts. I’m Winnie Muzzy, a money coach, online business strategist, and I help women entrepreneurs create sustainable businesses that leave space for real life, like vacations that don’t stress you out. If the idea of stepping away from your business makes you feel anxious or like everything might fall apart while you’re gone, this one’s for you. All right, picture this. You’re heading out on that trip that you’ve been planning for months. You’ve been saving, you’ve been preparing, you’ve been getting everything ready for this one trip. It might be a beach week, a family reunion, or just a few days away to catch your breath. But instead of feeling excited, your brain is spinning with questions. What if a client needs something? Should I still post on social media? What if I lose momentum or revenue while I’m gone. Look, I get it. I used to cram in a million things before I left, then check my email at every pause so I didn’t feel guilty about the downtime. But here’s what I learned.

Why Rest Is Productive and Essential for Sustainable Business Growth

[1:17] Taking a break isn’t the problem. And it’s not a fun and profitable business whenever I feel icky about taking a break. It’s the lack of planning and systems that creates the friction. And guess what? We can all step away without the wheels falling off. I promise you, you can. You just need a plan, a simple one, and one that fits you and your business. I want to say this loud and clear because it seems to go against cultural norms.

How to Identify What’s Actually Critical vs. What Can Wait

[1:48] Rest is productive. I’m going to say it a little louder for those in the back so they can hear me. Rest is productive. And it’s one of the most sustainable things you can do as a business owner. All right, let’s talk about how to prepare your business for a break without losing momentum or your mind. Number one, clarify what’s actually critical. Look, not everything needs to be done before you go. Start by asking, what truly can wait until I’m back? If it can wait, it doesn’t need to be done between the loads of laundry and the packing. Just let it go.

A 5-Step Vacation Prep System for Business Owners

[2:24] Usually those key things that you need to do before you go are fewer than you think. Here, I want you to be ruthless and be kind to future you. Number two, create a while I’m away plan. Decide in advance what’s happening while you’re gone. Will content still go out? If so, pre-schedule it. Will you respond to emails? If not, set up at your out of office. Do you have someone that can field your emails while you’re gone? Great. If not, include when you’ll get back to them in your out of office reply. Now, here’s a pro tip. Batch and schedule anything you want going out ahead of time, maybe a week before you leave, two weeks, whatever it needs to be, but go ahead and get that prepared and ready. These may be your emails, your posts, or your podcast. Whatever it is, schedule it so you can put your energy where you want it to go. Even a simple I’m out of office post builds trust and shows you plan ahead to your clients. Number three, prep your clients and yourself.

Boundary-Setting Strategies That Protect Your Time Off and Teach Clients Healthy Expectations

[3:27] Let your clients or collaborators know your availability in advance. Set your expectations. For example, you can say, hey, I’ll be offline from July 20th to the 28th and back in my inbox after that. Here’s how we can prep you so you’re still supported. Or here’s a way I can support you while I’m away. I often offer Voxer support while I’m away from my computer. I’ve tested it. I know it works for my schedule, but it may not work for you and that’s okay. The key here is to honor yourself and your needs. And if the guilt creeps in, remind yourself that you’re teaching your clients how to set their own boundaries by modeling that behavior in yourself. And that leads to number four. Set boundaries that you’ll actually keep. That last part is incredibly important here, that you’ll actually keep. Decide what offline looks like for you in advance. Is it a full break? Like check-ins on Tuesday mornings? Either is fine, but make it intentional. Don’t leave it as, I’ll just speak when I can, because that doesn’t lead to a fun and profitable online business. Number five, have a re-entry plan. Here, I want you to set yourself up for success for the day you get back. Mark where you left off in your planner and leave yourself three priorities to focus on on your first day back. These aren’t pressing worry-inducing activities. These are the things that you just wanna focus on whenever you get back. See them as like blinders for your vacation brain.

Create a Re-Entry Plan Before You Leave

[4:57] Also, don’t have too much on your calendar for the day or two after you return. Give yourself a buffer to ease back in. I suggest only having one thing in the morning and one thing in the afternoon for those first two days. Maybe even block off a big vision energy session or BVE as I call it. This is really helpful because your brain will be super happy and like all thinking creatively. So this gives you a chance to use that energy to grow your business. Now, if you don’t know what I’m talking about, perfectly fine. Go listen to episode three where we talk about four things to schedule every month in your business. Also, we’ll cover more on returning from vacation in the next episode, but these are the things you can do now before you leave to feel solid for when you get back. All right, let’s get to your action step. I’ve created a vacation checklist that you can download at wendymuzzy.com/vacationchecklist. It’s streamlined and it covers the real things that matter before and after a break. Now, I want to do a quick recap of what we’ve discussed today. You don’t need to choose between rest and results. A little planning goes a very long way. And you get to take a break without the guilt and still run a business you love. Now, go enjoy your vacation. Go have the time of your life and DM me on LinkedIn to tell me where you’re going. I love, like love in my core, all things travel. So please tell me, like I’m always looking for new ideas. And until next time, happy adventuring while running a fun and profitable online business!
