Podcast Management by Old State Media

[0:06] Hey there, and welcome to episode 20 of Your Fun and Profitable Online Business. This is the podcast that helps you grow your business with intention, momentum, and a whole lot more confetti. I’m your host, Wendy Muzzy, money coach, online business strategist, and your celebration buddy for building a business that actually feels good. In today’s episode, we’re talking about how to set your quarter up for success without over-complicating it and without over-booking yourself. Because here’s the thing, you don’t need a CEO retreat to plan your quarter. You just need 30 minutes, a notebook or a Google Doc, and a willingness to look ahead with intention. All right, let’s dive in. If the idea of planning your quarter feels overwhelming, you’re not alone. But skipping this step, it’s like boarding a plane without a destination. You don’t know what to pack, and you don’t even know where you’re going to end up.

A simple 4-step quarterly planning process you can complete in 30 minutes

[1:03] Instead, quarterly planning gives you focus so you know where you can put your energy, flexibility so you can adapt without scrambling, and momentum, because progress is easier when it’s broken down into 90-day chunks. You’re not doing this to be perfectly productive. I don’t want you to think that you have to get everything in straight order so you can finally be productive. No. You’re doing this so you can move forward with purpose and intention. Now, here’s the flow that I teach and I use myself. Step one, spend five to 10 minutes to reflect and reset. Now, before we can look ahead, we’ve got to take a breath and look back. Here you want to ask yourself, what worked really well last quarter? What felt heavy or confusing or just didn’t get done? And what surprised you in a good way or not so good way? And what do you want to do more of in the next 90 days? Now, here’s a bonus prompt. I’d love for this stage. What do I keep putting off and why? This answer is almost always gold. It tells you where your energy isn’t aligned. Now, I want you to know this part isn’t about self-judgment. This is about curiosity, like genuine, deep curiosity. You’re gathering clues here, not creating a courtroom because we don’t have any room or space for judgment. Step two, set your three core goals. Now that you know what’s working and what’s not working, it’s time to choose your focus. Aim for just three goals. Yes, just three. These might include launch a new offer, grow your list by 250 people, create a new onboarding system for clients, or prep a lead magnet email sequence. I suggest choosing one goal to help you make money, one goal to help you make your business feel better to run, and one goal that you just want to pursue just for the joy of it.

The importance of aligning your business goals with your real-life calendar

[3:09] Step three, align with real life. This is the part that’s easy to skip. And then we wonder why things feel hard. Here you want to look at your calendar. Do you have any vacations coming up? Are there summer camps or school breaks? Maybe a launch or a collaboration? Or there’s a client heavy week month system, whatever that may be. Then ask, do your goals support this season of life or are they fighting it? You get to decide when you do things and how you do them. So kind of adjust accordingly. Don’t overbook yourself here.

A monthly mapping strategy to turn big goals into actionable weekly steps

[3:45] Here’s an example. If July is a slow month for you, maybe that’s your systems and content month, not your launch and sprint season. Remember, your quarter should work with your life, not against it. Step four, map your monthly focus. Now this is where your goals get legs. I want you to break each goal into three to four smaller steps and then spread them across the next three months. For example, let’s say your goal is to launch a new offer. So maybe month one, you’re going to outline and pre-launch your content. Month two, you’re going to record and prep your systems. And month three, you’re going to launch and nurture your sequence. Now that you’ve got these monthly milestones, define your weekly to-do so you can move closer to your goal without the last minute scramble. You’ve got your roadmap here. Now you just have to plug things in and it’ll tell you what you need to do each day, each week, each month to achieve your goals.

Three common planning pitfalls that sabotage your success (and how to avoid them)

[4:43] Now let’s go over some common pitfalls. I’m gonna call this a confetti toss of caution here because this is what I sometimes see. Pitfall number one, making goals too big or too vague. Growing your business is not a goal. Book three new clients this month, that’s a goal. Pitfall number two, planning like you have 40 hours a week. Now, I know we want to put that much time in our business, but we really have to be honest with ourselves and we have to give ourselves a little bit of cushion. Your plan has to match your bandwidth. Otherwise, you’re setting yourself up to feel behind before you even start. Pitfall number three, forgetting to include buffer time. Life happens. Give yourself space for curve balls or bonus wins. If you get more done than you planned, celebrate, toss that confetti, tell people about it. All right, let’s get to your action step. Quarter three is right around the corner. I want you to take 30 minutes to walk yourself through the four steps. Number one, reflect and reset. Number two, set your goals. Number three, align with real life. And number four, map your monthly focus. Give yourself 30 minutes to make this happen. Even if it’s messy, even if your toddler interrupts halfway through, even if you only get through step one, you can come back to it tomorrow. The power is in the pause. Your momentum comes from taking just a moment to look ahead. And if you want a printable planning page to help with this, I’ve got one inside the fun and profitable community. You can join us at wendymuzzy.com/community. Here’s what I want you to know. Setting up your quarter doesn’t make you a better business owner. It reminds you that you’re already a great one. You’re not falling behind. You’re just getting more intentional. You don’t need a full-blown retreat or a color-coded wall calendar to plan your business. Unless that’s what you want. No judgment. You just need space and a little bit of structure to build it your way. So if you’re ready for more fun, more focus, and definitely more wins that feel like yours, come join us. Until next time, happy quarter planning!
